Our School

Westwood Presbyterian Church Preschool was founded in 1960 as a community outreach mission of the church. We welcome children of all abilities, backgrounds, cultures and faiths. We are open from 7:30am – 5:00pm, Monday through Friday and serve children ages 2 ½ through 5 years.

We offer a thoughtful, dynamic curriculum that responds to the children’s interests and needs and draws on best pedagogical practices. Through playful inquiry and investigation, our children explore math, science, literature, language, art, music, movement, technology and the natural world. As you walk through our classrooms, you will see children engaged in a wide range of activities from cooking, gardening and building to drawing, painting, singing, reading and writing. Our goal is to prepare all children not only for kindergarten but for our diverse, complex and wonderful world.

In addition to our regular preschool program, we offer a range of enrichment classes as well as a full Immersion Spanish Program.

For those children not old enough to join our preschool program, we also offer Parent & Me for children ages 18 months - 2 years and BabytalkLA for children ages 12 to 18 months.

Westwood Presbyterian Church

Welcome to the Westwood Presbyterian Church and to the WPC Preschool community. Because of our belief that every child is precious to God and worthy of our full attention and respect, our church has made early childhood education a significant priority for nearly six decades. We have been privileged to launch hundreds of children on their educational journey, providing foundations that will serve them well over a lifetime.

Our commitment to excellence is woven through every aspect of our preschool. From our caring staff to our child-centered philosophy and practices, we strive to provide our children with an enriching environment that will spark a lifelong love of learning.

The Westwood Presbyterian Church Preschool is unique among church-related preschools in our commitment to being non-sectarian. Children and families of all faiths are welcome. We encourage the values held in common by all faith traditions – to be kind, grateful, honest, generous of heart, sensitive toward the other, etc.  Being part of the human family requires that we learn early on to embrace and get along with others who think, understand the world, and worship differently. Preschool is the perfect time to get started on those critical life skills that make for richer lives and a more peaceful world.

Westwood Presbyterian Church’s concern is not only for children but includes the entire family. You and your family are warmly invited to take part in all aspects of the church’s life at any time. I do hope that, no matter your faith tradition, you are intentional about encouraging faith in your preschooler. In these challenging times, the foundation of faith is more important than ever.

Please know that if there is ever a way that I might be of service to you, I would count it an honor to do so. Thank you for entrusting your child to us — he/she is in very good hands.

Our Philosophy

When children enter our school, our priority is to make each one feel comfortable, safe and loved. From this place of trust, children have the confidence to explore the classroom, develop friendships, problem solve with materials and peers and challenge themselves with new tasks or activities.

At WPC Preschool we recognize that every child is an individual with different needs and interests. Therefore we provide an environment that encourages children to pursue their interests, nurture their strengths and work on areas of challenge. We know that children learn best through play and offer a wide range of hands-on activities for deep and thoughtful exploration. Through our daily interactions, we aim to help children develop a sense of responsibility and independence; an understanding of their roles as valued members of a community; a respect for others and the environment; and the ability to navigate the world with courage, humility, humor and hope.

Finally, we recognize that a diverse community deepens and enhances the experience of us all and welcome children of all backgrounds, faiths, skills and abilities. We believe in the inherent dignity and worth of each child as they grow socially emotionally, intellectually, physically and creatively.
